I have always been interested in psychology. When I first began my education journey back in 1999 at Macomb Community College, I took a psychology class and struggled to pass it. I became discouraged, and decided to go in a different direction. I earned an associates degree in Early Childhood Education. I taught preschool for many years at both a private academy and public school.
While my career in education was off to a good start, I was simultaneously preoccupied in my personal life. My sister was struggling with a blood disorder called Aplastic Anemia. After a stem cell transplant and many hurdles, unfortunately my sister passed away in 2004. This was not the first or the last time that I was met with overwhelming grief. I have dealt with grief more than the average person. At age 16, my boyfriend was killed in a car accident, I have lost people in my life due to drugs and alcohol. I share this, so that when I say that my experience comes from not only my education, but also my life experiences, I really mean it. I am able to fully empathize with many situations, including anxiety and depression. I understand the struggle of seeing a loved one feel suicidal. I also know the joy of seeing that person find the help that they needed, and learn to love life again.
After my sister passed, I found a new career path, in administrative business for a security design company. In doing so, I found myself back at school, this time pursuing a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership & communication. I have never been one to take the simple path. I thrive in multitasking, and during this time I also decided to become a mother. This took priority to me. I turned down a promotion to work full time as a mom.
Hi, I’m nicol.
After years of dedicating my time to my kids, I decided I needed to return to where I first started back in 1999. I went back to school, again, and graduated in April of 2019 with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. After a semester on campus at Oakland University's counseling center, I fulfilled my internship at a group crisis counseling center. From there, I worked for a private practice until I decided to take a chance on my own. I truly love what I do, and find joy in helping others.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. If you have any questions about my practice, or would like to see if I would make a good fit as your therapist, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I am happy to offer free consultations. It is important to me that you feel comfortable and safe to talk about your life’s journey with me
